I love the outdoors, and with two little girls I’m always trying to find ways for them to love the outdoors, too. I have to be honest and say that my older daughter, who recently turned two, even though she’s beginning ballet she also has a little out-side streak to her. And I LOVE it!
Anyway, a couple of weeks ago we went camping in our back yard on a Friday night – the weather was cool, the air was clear, and the tent was a-callin’ our name. My wife and I enjoy camping and we want our daughters to enjoy it, too, but we also didn’t want to drive someplace and spend money only to have to pack up camp in the middle of the night. So we left the infant in the house with the monitor and packed the toddler into the tent in the back yard. She had a BALL – an absolute ball! We sang “Old McDonald” and “If You’re Happy & You Know It” on the deck with me strumming the guitar and her dancing and twirling, made smores and roasted marshmellows over the fire, and then climbed into bed about 10:15 (well, she went to bed at 9:15) with the flashlights and slept like babies through the night.
It was fun and cheap – which is some of the best types of fun. Before we went to sleep we prayed that Jesus would keep us safe, and we prayed before we ate our picnic pizza, and we talked about Jesus on the deck. And we had fun.
It was a good time.
